What True Self-Love Actually Feels Like: Learning to Stop Abandoning Yourself

In this solo episode of The Shift with Beth Podcast, I’m sharing what self-love has actually looked like in my own healing journey and why it took me until 2023 to understand what it meant to truly love myself.

Who Are You Without the Roles You’ve Built Your Life Around? with Aimee Wood

In this episode of The Shift with Beth Podcast, I’m sitting down with one of my very best friends, Aimee Wood, for an honest conversation about identity, self-worth, relationships, hyper-independence, career success, motherhood, and learning to come home to yourself.

Let’s take the first breath together.

The other night I woke up to go to the bathroom ar The other night I woke up to go to the bathroom around 2:30am, and when I got back in bed, Randy was also awake.
We were cuddling, trying to fall back asleep, and suddenly I said, “I’m starving.”
He said, “I was just about to say that.”
“What do you want?”
And I said “guess!”
“Chocolate chip pancakes?”
Yessssss
So at 3am, we got out of bed and Randy made pancakes. 🥞
And because he knows me so well, he made one into Minnie Mouse because he knew my inner child would love it. Are we serious about how sweet he is?
Then, at 4am, we were sitting in the hot tub under the stars.
Mind you, we have the kids and work very soon.
And I kept thinking about how easy it would have been to talk ourselves out of it.
“It’s 3am. We need to sleep.”
“I’m eating healthy. I shouldn’t have pancakes.”
“This is ridiculous.”
But instead, we just listened to what felt good.
And it wasn’t really about the pancakes.
It was about letting ourselves want something. Being playful. Being spontaneous. Actually living.
For so much of my life, I overrode myself and did what I thought I should do.
Coming home to myself has meant learning to listen to what feels true, even when it isn’t the most practical choice.
Sometimes that looks like a boundary.
Sometimes it looks like saying no.
And sometimes it looks like chocolate chip pancakes at 3am and a hot tub under the stars. ✨
It gets to be this good, and ofc this isn’t something that happens a lot…but I love how we embrace when it does.

Day 26. Practicing Being Seen! I didn’t realize I Day 26. Practicing Being Seen!
I didn’t realize I was making this part of myself small.
For years, I barely talked about the fact that I’m a published author.
Not because I wasn’t proud of what I wrote, but because I had convinced myself it “didn’t really count.”
I didn’t write the whole book. I contributed one essay alongside ten other incredible women.
So I diminished it.
And honestly, I also worried about who might be offended by what I wrote.
So instead of fully owning something I was proud of, I made myself smaller.
But this is what I’m realizing through practicing being seen:
Sometimes we don’t hide because we’re ashamed.
Sometimes we hide because we’re worried about what other people will think.
Sometimes we downplay our accomplishments because we’ve decided they aren’t enough to take up space.
And sometimes we make ourselves smaller because being fully seen means someone else might have an opinion about us.
I’m done doing that.
I am a published author. ✨
I’m incredibly proud of the essay I wrote about worthiness, my experience growing up in organized religion, leaving in 2019, and the journey of realizing that my worth was never something I had to earn.
And I’m especially proud of the letter to my kids that I included in it.
So today, I’m letting myself own this without a disclaimer.
I’m proud of myself.
I’m proud of what I created.
And I’m practicing letting other people see it, too.
See you tomorrow!

I thought I loved myself. I would have told you I I thought I loved myself.
I would have told you I did my whole life.
And I genuinely believed it.
What I didn’t understand was how often I was abandoning myself in the name of being loved, accepted, needed, or “easy” to be around.
Real self love goes so much deeper.
It’s the boundary you finally enforce.
The no you stop explaining.
The need you finally voice.
The friendship you release.
The relationship you walk away from.
The intuition you stop talking yourself out of.
The moment you let yourself be fully seen.
The decision to choose authenticity over approval.
And when you inevitably abandon yourself again, because we all do, it’s noticing it without shame and finding your way back home.
That is self love.
It’s not a destination.
It’s a practice.
And I’m talking about this in much more depth on today’s podcast episode, What True Love Actually Feels Like, where I share tangible ways to actually begin learning how to love yourself.
Because maybe the question isn’t:
“Do I love myself?”
Maybe the better question is:
“Where am I still abandoning myself?”
That question changed everything for me. ❤️

Self-love isn’t always soft. Sometimes it looks l Self-love isn’t always soft.
Sometimes it looks like saying no.
Disappointing someone.
Setting the boundary.
Choosing authenticity over being agreeable.
Having your own back when no one else is watching.
We’ve been taught, especially as women and mothers, that putting ourselves first is selfish. That love means sacrificing, giving, and pouring from ourselves until there’s nothing left.
But constantly abandoning yourself to keep everyone else comfortable isn’t love.
It’s self-abandonment.
And learning to choose yourself after years of being taught otherwise can feel incredibly uncomfortable.
That’s the deeper work of self-love.
Not just loving yourself when it’s easy, but trusting yourself enough to honor what you need, even when someone else doesn’t understand it.
Choosing yourself isn’t selfish.
It’s how you stop disappearing from your own life.

Day 24 Practicing Being Seen For a long time, I t Day 24 Practicing Being Seen
For a long time, I thought being seen meant being liked.
Being understood.
Being approved of.
Being validated.
But this challenge has taught me something very different.
Being seen is letting yourself be fully expressed without abandoning yourself in the process.
And that has been the most freeing part of showing up every day this month.
I didn’t start this challenge to grow my following. I started it because I wanted to practice choosing myself. Trusting myself. Listening to my intuition. And letting myself be seen exactly as I am.
So yes, seeing hundreds of new people come into this community has been incredibly exciting.
But what has moved me the most is realizing that the more authentically I show up, the more clearly I can see the work I’m here to do.
I’m here to talk about self abandonment.
The ways we leave ourselves to be accepted.
The ways we silence our voice.
The ways we override our intuition.
The ways we make ourselves smaller.
The ways we look outside of ourselves for permission to be who we already are.
And most of us don’t even realize we’re doing it.
This is the work I care deeply about.
And if you’re here because something I’ve shared has resonated with you, I’m so glad you’re here. ❤️
Maybe being seen isn’t about getting everyone to see you.
Maybe it’s about finally being willing to see yourself.
Sending love and healing to all.
