Most people think the Enneagram is just another personality test.
But when used correctly, it becomes something much deeper.
It becomes a mirror.
In this powerful episode of Shift with Beth, Beth sits down with Enneagram expert and coach Tracy O’Malley to talk about healing patterns, relationships, parenting, emotional triggers, and the life-changing power of truly understanding yourself.
And one of the biggest takeaways from the conversation is this:
You repeat what you don’t repair.
Why So Many People Are Mistyped on the Enneagram
One of the most important parts of the conversation centered around how many people are actually mistyped on the Enneagram.
According to Tracy, most online Enneagram tests focus too heavily on behavior instead of core motivation. That means people often receive a type that reflects how they behave externally rather than why they behave that way internally.
That distinction matters.
Because if you’re working from the wrong Enneagram type, you’re essentially trying to heal, grow, and navigate relationships using the wrong map.
Beth shared how she was originally mistyped as an Enneagram 8 before eventually discovering she was actually an Enneagram 3. While some parts of the type resonated behaviorally, the deeper motivations underneath did not fully align.
This is where accurate typing becomes incredibly important for self-awareness and healing work.
Healing Relationship Patterns Starts with Self-Awareness
A major theme throughout the episode was how unresolved childhood patterns continue repeating in adulthood until they are consciously addressed.
Many people believe their struggles in relationships are only about the current relationship itself. But often, those patterns started much earlier.
Old wounds, emotional survival strategies, people-pleasing, emotional shutdown, hyper-independence, and fear of vulnerability are usually rooted in childhood experiences and nervous system conditioning.
As Tracy explained, relationships often reveal what still needs healing inside of us.
This doesn’t mean blaming yourself for painful relationships or experiences. Instead, it means becoming aware of the role your nervous system patterns may have played in what felt familiar, safe, or emotionally acceptable.
That awareness creates the opportunity to change.
Conscious Relationships Still Trigger You
One of the most powerful parts of the conversation was the discussion around conscious relationships.
Many people believe that once they heal, they will never feel triggered again.
But that isn’t reality.
Even safe, healthy relationships can activate old fears, insecurities, and emotional patterns.
The difference is that conscious relationships create space for awareness, communication, accountability, and repair instead of blame, avoidance, or emotional shutdown.
Tracy shared openly about finding love again after divorce and years of healing work. She explained how understanding the Enneagram allowed her to recognize emotional patterns inside herself without sabotaging the relationship.
This is where emotional intelligence becomes essential.
Healthy relationships are not about never getting triggered. They are about learning how to stay present, communicate honestly, and work through activation without abandoning yourself or the relationship.
Parenting Through Awareness Instead of Control
Another deeply impactful part of the episode focused on parenting and generational healing.
Tracy explained how discovering the Enneagram transformed the way she parented her children. Instead of expecting them to think, process, and emotionally operate like she did, she learned how differently each child experienced the world.
That shift changed everything.
Instead of trying to create “mini versions” of ourselves, conscious parenting asks us to truly see our children for who they are individually.
It also requires accountability.
Children learn more from what parents model than from what parents say.
That means healing your own emotional patterns becomes part of breaking generational cycles.
One of the most meaningful reminders from the episode was this:
It is never too late to repair.
Even if your children have seen unhealthy dynamics, emotional reactivity, or difficult seasons, consistent repair, accountability, and emotional safety can still transform the relationship over time.
The Real Goal of Healing
Healing is not about becoming perfect.
It’s about becoming aware.
It’s about recognizing your triggers, patterns, defenses, fears, coping mechanisms, and emotional conditioning with compassion instead of shame.
It’s about learning how to stay connected to yourself while also creating healthier relationships with others.
And according to both Beth and Tracy, the Enneagram can become an incredibly powerful tool for that process when used with integrity and self-awareness.
Because the more deeply you understand yourself, the more freedom you create in every area of your life.
